Video 078 (PT 1.2) Imagination interweaves - two handed for ego state work

Use this solution

This interweave can be used to delineate ego states and to initiate interaction between them. It is also useful to facilitate integration between two ego states.

What this covers

In this video you will see a therapist work with a child part or ego state and an adult part or ego state using a two-handed interweave. This new child ego state has emerged following ego state work demonstrated in Videos 001, 002 and 003.

This video shows how to use a two-handed interweave to initiate interaction between ego states and to facilitate integration. The ego states include a child part and an adult part.  In the language of Structural Dissociation (See Video 001, Wrap up), these would be called the EP (the Emotional Part) and the ANP (the Apparently Normal Part).

Steps in the process:

Facilitating interaction

  1. Client anchors one ego state in one hand (let the client choose which hand holds this).
  2. Client anchors the second ego state in the other.
  3. If the differences between the parts is unclear, delineate the differences with physical, emotional and other traits.
  4. Therapist facilitates interaction between the two states while applying bilateral stimulation (BLS) - eye movements, tapping, or client can alternate opening and closing hands. Therapist keeps the client accessing internally by asking feeling, sensing, wondering or thinking questions.
  5. After a BLS set (15-24 passes), therapist asks, “What do you notice now or what difference do you notice or what’s come up?” followed by “Go with that.” Or he/she may ask another question if appropriate, described in 4 above.
  6. Sometimes, the client will report, “One hand is feeling light (or heavy).” Therapist can then say, “Go with that”, plus BLS; or may ask, “What does that mean/say to/about you?”, then says, “Go with that.”
  7. Repeat step 5: BLS, followed by, “What difference do you notice?” or “What’s come up?” and so on until distress is reduced/resolution is achieved.

Integration

  1. Client anchors a distressed/disturbed child ego state in one hand and finds the most wise/caring/loving/strongest adult self and anchors it in the other hand.
  2. Have the adult part notice how the child part is feeling, her thoughts and vulnerability. BLS
  3. Have the adult part notice and feel the wisdom, caring, loving, strongest qualities he/she brings to the situation. BLS
  4. Have the client bring their ‘adult’ hand over the hand holding the child and start continual BLS while you suggest to the client that they: • let the child part know you are there, • let the child part notice the adult part’s strength, love, caring, etc. • tell the child part that they live with you now and you will take care of them. • show the child part your adult life – house, job, family, friends, those you love, etc. Stop BLS
  5. Ask the child part how they are. BLS
  6. Ask the child part where they are. BLS Note: often the child will say they are inside you. If not:
  7. Ask the child part where are they going to live so you can take care of them from now on. BLS
