Video 008 Installing Future Templates

Use this solution

Once past trauma related memories and present triggers have been successfully resolved and the client identifies some challenges facing them in the present and/or future.  Use this protocol to build skills.

What this covers

Case of a man injured in an RTA in which his partner died. The trauma has been treated successfully, but he returns to therapy because a Court case is coming up and he will be a key witness.  Video demonstrates how to work with a client in order to design an optimal response to present and future challenges, taking account of their own beliefs and what is feasible.  It then shows how to install this – the future template – with bilateral stimulation.

How long

+ Aide-mémoire for Future Templates

You can copy and paste this text into a Word document, and can edit it, adding any additional text you might find helpful.

  1. Explain the idea of future templates and the benefit they can deliver.
  2. With the client, identify how they wish to be perceiving, acting, believing and feeling in the present and future. This needs to take account of the client’s own beliefs, and what is realistic and feasible.
  3. Have the client imagine an optimal response to whatever situation they need help to face, and then to create and run a short video about the chosen response.
  4. Once they have done this ask the client to identify any negative beliefs, emotions or sensations experienced during the video.
  5. Therapist then decides how to address these PODS (Points of disturbance) – with the full standard EMDR protocol, simple bilateral stimulation or maybe some education/skill development, e.g. Assertiveness training.
  6. When one or more of these options are done, ask the client to imagine the optimal response again, incorporating in the video any positive cognition, emotion or physical sensation that emerged during processing. The therapist does slow BLS while the client ‘plays the video’ through.
  7. Check outcome with client, and address any remaining concerns.
